Recapping Kanban Week 2022

Recapping Kanban Week 2022

The weather was awesome and so were the conversations and laughter at the 2022 Kanban Global Summit and Kanban Leadership Retreat in San Diego!

We learned that Kanban is alive and well throughout the world at scale. So many participants were discussing how their leadership is getting involved by leading initiatives using Kanban practices.

KGS attendees learned the lost arts of leadership from Chet Richards and found laughter in Michael Godeck’s delightful and creative presentation that was powerful enough to make Dragos yell “You’re hired!”

We saw so many great talks that focused on how Kanban is used within large organizations, including Adobe, IBM, the US Department of Homeland Security, and major financial institutions within Brazil.

“Unlike other conferences, Kanban Global Summit provides real-life practical insights and new innovations that are pushing the state of the art in business management.”

Craeg Strong

At KLR, we finally got to Connect, Explore, and Challenge key topics like Leadership Development with Kanban, STATIK for Upstream, Kanban Consulting Engagements Lessons Learned, and the Dream Dashboard of the Kanban C-Level. Everyone had a chance to propose, participate, and discuss these concepts and more. We all went home feeling proud to be a part of this community of Kanban practitioners and are looking forward to next year’s KLR.

Both events were also filled with great meal-time conversations among colleagues and, for the first time in two years, we were able to sit among our peers (both new and experienced) to explore and challenge concepts in Kanban.

Stay tuned for Kanban Global Summit videos and presentations coming out at the end of October!

“Leaders in the Kanban Community welcome, encourage, and share their knowledge and experiences while inviting participation, collaboration, and engagement. KLR is a one of kind learning experience.”

Cheers from the Kanban University Team!

Are You Ready to Play the Little’s Law Game?

July 29, 2022 by Kanban University

Are You Ready to Play the Little’s Law Game?

Todd Little, Chairman of Kanban University, invites you to his 2022 Kanban Global Summit workshop

Monday, August 22
4:00 PM – 6:00 PM
Kanban Global Summit
San Diego, California, USA

Yes! I Want to Attend the Kanban Global Summit 2022

Little’s Law has been used in queuing theory for over half a century. It is an elegant explanation of the relationship between average throughput, Work in Progress (WIP), and cycle time.

In a stable environment, it gives us a good understanding of the performance of the system which can be used for forecasting. But where are the estimates? Certainly, size must matter. But does it?

In this workshop at the Kanban Global Summit, Todd Little explores Little’s Law through theory and the experience of simulations. Each attendee will come away with a better understanding of Little’s Law and the core assumptions necessary for it to be applicable and useful in forecasting. Through the simulation, you will experience why the estimation of individual items is often not necessary in an environment where Little’s Law applies.

Watch the video above to hear more from Todd Little and why you should attend his session.

Kanban Week 2022 will follow the CDC’s Covid safety guidelines, along with state and local guidelines for California and the city of San Diego, to ensure a safe event for attendees.

Fixing Broken Agile Transformations with Kanban

July 15, 2022 by Kanban University

Clean Up On Aisle 4! The image depicts a person with cleaning tools to represent fixing a broken agile transformation with Kanban.

“Clean Up On Aisle 4!” Fixing Broken Agile Transformations with Kanban

With a little over a month until we convene in San Diego, our Kanban Global Summit 2022 program is final! Start making your plans now for the sessions you’d like to attend. Will you choose our newest addition to the program? Scott Yankton and Chris Ring of IBM present “Clean Up On Aisle 4!” Fixing Broken Agile Transformations with Kanban.

Scott and Chris say they are not really Agile or Kanban evangelists per se or learned academics in these styles of working. What they are is much closer to “organizational consultants” who want to use the best techniques available for building “fit for purpose” organizations that can win in the marketplace.

In their experience, the best technique for a business side transformation or saving an agile transformation gone awry, is Kanban.

Hear from them and many more speakers at the Kanban Global Summit, August 22-24, 2022 in San Diego, California. Special discounts are available. Email us to find out what might work for you!

TALK

“Clean Up On Aisle 4!”
Fixing Broken Agile Transformations with Kanban

In our experience, especially over the past few years, we have seen less straight agile transformations of development teams and more of two specific trends:

  • A shift in interest and focus to apply agile to much more complex/difficult business organizations
  • Course corrections or turnarounds of poorly executed agile transformations

This session is not a deep exploration of Kanban theory, but rather is focused on the practical guidance for large scale, highly matrix’d, complex organizational transformations. This includes adopting an ecosystem approach to Kanban, and some key framework components that consistently generate progress.

In this discussion, Scott Yankton (former federal bank regulator/Chief Operating Officer/Consultant, and current IBM Program Director), and Chris Ring (IBM Senior Manager with 35 years experience navigating a highly matrix’d, highly complex Fortune 50 company) reveal key lessons on what works and what doesn’t in this environment, and the keys to their success to date.
